Here are the ways you can maximise on marketing and advertise your next film

Artists and filmmakers, we can be honest with ourselves here. Marketing and sales is not our strong suit by default. Even with our producers there’s always seems to be this ick about promoting our short films for a lot of reasons. The main reasons I can pick out are to potentially coming off as a shill or a sellout, fearing that doing so can turn off our potential audience and people that surrounds us, thinking that word of mouth alone is enough and that by some miracle that doesn’t involve the actors or the director or the cinematographer that our short film will be most popular around the world amongst the rest . Another big potential reason is this air of cynicism that no one would be interested in seeing our films except fo other filmmakers or these small, niche groups of people who tend to go to film festivals; that your film has no place in a commercial sphere. This is especially true for filmmakers with their short films. However, the reality is that without some form of mar

EXT. — front of house — DAY Hitman V.O For me, this shit got old quick…but I’ve yet to find a higher paying profession catered to my only skill that I’ve mastered in my fucking life. Voice over of the Hitman and the contract details between the hitman and his contractor played over. The Hitman drives to the corner of an unguarded house that he uses as a vantage point. Hitman V.O Reached Location Sir. Contractor V.O Good… You know what to do He stops his car at the front and gets out. He closes the car door and walks to the boot. He opens the boot and grabs out a case, then shuts the boot door. Hitman V.O Day after day. Contract after contract…Target after target. He walks to the stairs leading to the entrance of the house. He hops over the Balcony on his right to access the white concreted front balcony. EXT. House Balcony — DAY He kneels down and opens the case to see separated pieces of a rifle stacked neatly. He assembles the rifles with divine precision, as if he’s done this a mi

Poem: An ode to single people

certainly known i’ll always be lonely, So I built my life to only want money Accustomed to the sweet lie Thinking it is worthy to die  Wrapped in a ball and chain, Unable to fly love is reserved for the worthy,  So basically, everyone else but me Always out of reach To grab and take the ecstasy we like to preach a trap open to all  as we cant avoid...always fall Something that all seems to be too late to teach  even though 2 people who come together as 1 may live the longest those that walk the lonely road all their life are always the strongest Difficult to accept I’ll never find love, Lust, friendship and validation as I was picked for answer E….none of the above How I yearn for the bittersweet taste of death I’d say As that would be the only thing in my life that would go my way To all the women I sought after But matched with another I thank you for helping me to walk the assuring path of meeting the grim reaper As I embrace my solo death sad to know love won’t be the experience I

My first short film took over a year to make. Here’s why.

I starting writing the script in June 2021 but I properly placed the initial efforts into green lighting my short film onto pre production around early march 2022 with the storyboards as the 1st thing to do.I organised 1st pre prod meeting and hiring my film friends as above the line crew in July 2022. Casting finished in late April 2022. Outside of my group of friends, I externally hired a film armourer to cover the legalities along with supplying the prop weapons on set and a talented hair + make up artist for the femme fatale character. It cost around $5k in total to make. Some expenses covered by the exec producer and a couple of my mates but mostly from me. Equipment purchases  Equipment rental costs  Paying crew  Paying cast  Premiere costs.  Merch costs  Film festival fees  I was busy working on other film related projects and other jobs in parallel to the production. The editor and foley artist didn’t start post production until December 2022. The colour grading o

Here’s how to distribute and actually monetise your short films

A lot of filmmakers around the world typically state of short films being nothing more than calling cards to showcase potential producers/studios on what your skills are as a filmmaker. I can’t blame them fully as generally, we weren’t educated on recent and ever growing platforms either dedicated to shorts/videos beyond just YouTube and Vimeo… and only educated in film schools that the only way to earn any money is from private premiers and hopefully win prize money from film festivals. And before you go ahead and say “But surely distributors can grab my film from me and put it out there on NETFLIX and Amazon prime and such…” Oh you sweet yet naive idiot. Firstly, notable and underground distributors generally don’t take shorts unless its made from Pixar or a famous director or something since they get as much eyeballs as much compared to features and documentaries. Secondly, Most popular streaming services as a rule of thumb don’t insert shorts into their catalogues. Not many p
